Question Which Version of Linux is this !

Hi All,

I've downloded Free Enterprise Linux from Oracle Website for Learning purposes.

When I run cat /proc/version it shows :
[root@mysrvr ~]# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.18-8.el5xen (mockbuild@ca-build14) (gcc version 4.1.1 20070105 (Red Hat 4.1.1-52)) #1 SMP Wed Jun 6 00:05:22 EDT 2007

[root@mysrvr ~]#
[root@mysrvr ~]# uname -a
Linux mysrvr.localdomain 2.6.18-8.el5xen #1 SMP Wed Jun 6 00:05:22 EDT 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Is this Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 or 4.1 !
As per Oracle website they have given it as Enterprise Linux 5 but internally it shows as 4.1

A little confused.

Please help

Thanks & Regards,

RamanaRao

It would appear that the RedHat 5 kernel was compiled on RedHat 4.1.
Quote:
Linux mysrvr.localdomain 2.6.18-8.el5xen
Enterprise Linux 5 in kernel version.
Quote:
(gcc version 4.1.1 20070105 (Red Hat 4.1.1-52))
This identifies the system the kernel was compiled on, not what it is running now.

You can run
Code:
cat /etc/redhat-release
to find the Redhat version.

Which Version of Linux is this !

Hi

Thanks for your inputs.

So If I were to install some of the missing library files [ For Oracle ] like gcc compat libraries or libc-compat*** files I should be installing that of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 version's! Right

Regards,

If /etc/redhat-release says it's RHEL 5 then you should install the libraries for this version. The output of uname and /proc/version is the kernel version of your system.

Regards
