Which version of Fedora for an old PC ?
 

Hi there guys,
I've got an old 733Hz PC with 256 RAM and it has SLED 10 installed. However the performance is a bit slow hardly surprising though. Just wanted to know if things could improve if I installed a version of Fedora and if so which one ? I did have RedHat 9.0 installed on a similar spec machine and it worked great. Would migrating from SLED10 to Fedora* slow things down considerably ? Chances are that I will have Fluxbox as my window manager to ease the pain somewhat !

My opinion is that changing the window manager is the most effective change... When using old PCs, anyway, I found the vectorlinux distro excellent, but there are many more. These distros have up-to-date packages, but aimed at old PCs, in my opinion this is better than installing old distros.

I'll second the VectorLinux recommendation.
I'm using Vector Linux Light w/ 64 MB RAM
It is my main OS. I use it more than any other.

You can fedora 5 which required only 196 Mb of RAM.
i use redhat 9 on my 128 RD RAM & it works Great ..

I hope to god that, that machine isn't connected to the internet, its not a good idea to use unsupported linux distros

You should use this one:
It has LIGHT speed, using only the ram, using just 100Mb and have EVERYTHING you need for a normal work (Office, internet, whatever).

I don't think puppy linux is a good idea, though I have installed it at a 166 MHz machine. Vectorlinux should be ideal for your configuration

You don't have to change distros, just install and use a different desktop environment or window manager. XFCE and Fluxbox are good alternatives for GNOME and they are available in the SUSE repos. If you still want to go with Fedora, then get the XFCE spin of Fedora 8 or Fedora 9.
