Why Debian ... A Sales Pitch

Hi

You might want to look into a distro designed for older hardware, like Vector or a trimmed down version of Mepis. Also, Slackware (excellent distro) with a lightweight desktop would be great. You will also learn a lot about Linux with Slackware as it is, in my opinion, as close to pure Linux as you can get (though all distros are Linux.)

Hope this helps.

Bob

Don't purchase---it is free from any number of sites:
Ubuntu
Arch
Mandrake (if you dig around)
OpenSUSE
Fedora
Debian
Slackware

Ubuntu is my first choice--but wait a few days and get 6.6 (current is 5.10) 6.6 was supposed to be 6.4, but the slipped it.
