Which programs shall i install


Hi everyone,

i've just installed mandrake 10, and this is my first linux experience.

Which programs do you suggest me to install..
You may recommend for example

for playing mp3s = xmms
for videos = mplayer ....
for firewall.. = ???...
for photoshop = ....

i wanna learn your basic programs, so i may install them too

This link doesn't so much tell you which program to install so much as discussing basic application equivalents between Windows and Linux.

firewall..... the firewall in linux is built into the kernel... so you already have a firewall. you just ned to tell it what to allow and what not to allow.

you do this with a command line program called iptables. however, if you dont have the knoledge to setup a working firewall yourself, there are graphical programs sucj as firestarter, which will setup a firewall for you.

Browser = mozilla
firewall = shorewall
music = xmms
video = mplayer / Xine
photos = the gimp

you will need a c/c++ compiler installed... mandrake 10 comes with gcc adn g++ - install both
