Which processor is best for Linux server!!
Hi all,
In this 2 processor which is best for linux centos 6 server. 1. Xeon X3220 2.4Ghz, 2. Intel Core i3 2100 3.10Ghz |
The Xeon is a quad-core processor, the i3 is a dual-core. Remember that those processors are not compatible, you can't put the i3 in a mainboard for the Xeon and vice versa.
And without knowing the purpose for this server (and running CentOS 6 on it is not a purpose) nobody can answer. |
Hi TobiSGD,
Thanks for the Reply its for Shared web hosting purpose, sorry i forget to mention in last message, we plan to oder a new server, our server provider offers in these processor packages so which is best for that. |
From the little information you've provided,.. the i3 is a dual core, the Xeon is a quad core -- which is better for a generic server? The quad core of course.
I don't personally see a way that the i3 could ever be better or faster than the Xeon |
In a very general statement, a xeon is really made to run server type of tasks.

Xeon X3220 is pretty old (january 2007 release) Core2Quad based server CPU.
i3s are cheap-ass desktop CPUs that are fairly new. I'd probably take the Xeon X3220. But I dont get how you can have a choice between a server CPU that could be considered obsolete, or a new desktop CPU that was never made for server tasks... |
Thank alot guys for your efforts,
i go with after long discusssion :-) Xeon X3220 2.4Ghz |
