Which linux arch for an intel Quad 9300

Hi all,

I just started to learn linux and choosed debian, it is said very stable. On debian.org and in the stable releases section we can find the standard i386 arch but amd64 or IA64 too. I really don't know which one i should download to take advantage of my CPU (Intel Quad 9300 2.5 Ghz). I think that amd64 is only for AMD procs but not sure for IA64. Can someone help me too make the good choice ? Thanks

Sinan

IA64 is for Intel Itanium processors, which is different from x86_64. The label amd64 is a generic X86_64 name for BOTH amd and intel processors. It's just x86_64 was designed by amd, hence the name amd64.

You need the AMD64 version as this covers Intel and AMD processors.
Don't install the ia64 version as this is for the old Itanium Intel processors.
I would recommend the net-install version here's a link:

x86_64 is equivalent to amd64 (AMD) which is equivalent to emt64 (Intel). However ia64 is only for Itanium processors.
