which kernel i should install for Slackware?

hey guys i am installing slackware right now

and i am presented with a list of many kernels to install

which kernel should i choose?

-thanks guys

bare.i usually works best for desktops.

After installing you'll probably want to upgrade to the latest as all versions prior to 2.4.23 have the exploit... ;)

thanks tricky kid

i have kernel 2.4.22 so i think that will be good enough untill i learn how to compile and install the kernel

FYI and to just make aware, 2.4.22 is also affected. Installing and recompiling in Slackware is a piece of cake. We have a sticky in our Slackware forum that will take you step by step when that time comes for you.

Regards.

oh ok thanks tricky

now i have another question :)

what is xfs?

because when the setup asks me to install lilo it get the option to install as root flopy or master boot record

for the descritipions for the root option is said to be recommended but it says not for use with xfs

trickykid 12-12-2003 05:48 PM

XFS is a type of filesystem. I always choose MBR to install the linux loader (lilo) to boot from, etc.

Longinus 12-12-2003 06:13 PM

oh ok

so does MBR have an advantage over xfs?

Poprocks 12-12-2003 07:16 PM

No, the MBR is the Master Boot Record, and that is where Lilo is typically installed. XFS is a filesystem that you will set for your Linux system itself and has nothing to do with the MBR.
