which is an ideal distro for me?
Hi first off i'd like to state that ive tried ubuntu and debian
but im not really sure if they are the right fit for me i would like a distro that has alot of software availible both newest versions and older software. My real concern is the deb vs rpm package formats. which is the most availible? (eg most software in that format)as far as ui goes gnome or something styled similar. If you need any extra info to help narrow the choices feel free to ask. ps: i have tried multiple linux distro choosers none were to helpful. |
Hello
Debian has loads of packages but you can take a look at Gentoo or Arch to see if either of them fit your needs. |

I'd like to put in another vote for Debian or Mint. Fedora is easy to work with as well.
Really though, any distro you choose will have a similar selection of software available. RPM or DEB...it doesn't really matter. Either one is just a way to install the software you want. Each distro has a different feel, kind of like different cars suit different people. The only way is to test drive a bunch and see what you think. If you're not sure what you like, I definitely recommend using VMWare or VirtualBox to try out different ones before you spend a great deal of time installing and reinstalling and re-reinstalling... When you find your distro, it will just seem right. There are no best distributions. I went through at least half a dozen before I found MY distro (Debian). Good luck. Don't give up. It's worth it. |
Hi and welcome to LQ!
As said from others, there are no best distributions. Try and enjoy: http://distrowatch.com/ |
