Which file to download md5 or iso?
 

I am trying to download the cd from this ftp site below

Which file should I download and burn?
I want the universal x86 Live cd (2004.1)

So I assume I have to download the one that says universal but which one?iso or md5? what about contents-universal and read me?

what should be put on cd so it becomes bootable?

Md5 are just a checksum, to make sure you have the entire file correct. The file that you use is the .iso. You need to burn the iso, which is a similiar process to unzipping a compressed file. If you are on windows, open nero and under the file options, choose burn image. If you're already on linux, you can use any number of burning programs to burn the .iso image.

If you don't translate you .iso in to files and folders, it won't work. Don't just dump the .iso onto a cd, burn it, and expect it to work.

If I have understood okay... I can unzip and put the files from iso file in the cd and that should work.

well the iso is the image file of the cd... this is what you have to burn onto the cd... since it is an image, once you burn it on cd you will have all the files you need on the cd (ie. you shouldnt end up with a cd containing the .iso file)... on Windows i think Alcohol 120% is the best prog ... and for Linux i prefer k3b...

as for md5... its a file you would be better of downloading... its very small anyways... you use this to check if the .iso file you have downloaded is error free... there are instructions on how to do this on the net.... here are some i found very quickly on google..

Yes and no. you don't "unzip" the iso, but it does need to be translated from an .iso to a series of files and folders. Nero does it fine, just tell it to burn an image, and it will handle everything fine. I would expect there is a program that can "unpack" an .iso (I'd guess you're using windows?), but I don't know what it is called. I'm sure google can help you out if that is what you want to do.

I havent used linux yet... so I downloaded a SolidBlue Win MD5 Sum 1.0 free software and it looks like I have to select the iso file and then get the number inside the md5 file and compare :)

I think I got it now. The contents-universal file I assume isnt needed then?

forgot to mention... its always better to burn at the slowest speed possible... less errors and the cd will be more compliant with more drives..

I'm assuming you are download Gentoo. If you are a new user, I would suggest maybe downloading something easier to use such as Fedora, SuSE Personal, Mandrake or Debian.

I would recommend you to download the iso images, check the md5 sums under Windows using md5summer and then use Nero to burn your CD/DVDs.

since i have external usb harddrive which I want to install on so I can use it at home and at the university I chose this version or flavour of linux... based on this article

He says he installed Gentoo..... and he talks abt the Western Digital external drive I have so I thought I try that... someone gave me whitebox cds and it didnt detect the USB harddrive so I am trying this one.....

If you're like me, and your downloading your ISO on a windows machine (don't hate me, it's what we have at work) and then taking them home to set up you rlinux box, here's an easy solution:

Roxio Easy CD Creator.

If you have this program, you can download the ISO. The launch the cd creator, and select "make a data disk" if you are given the option. If so, or if not, click on file, then move down to where it says create image from ISO. It will do the rest for you, and the cd should work just fine.
