which distro for laptop?
im using the latest version of ubuntu on a 4 year old dell 780 optiplex and I am more than impressed with the speed and agility of the machine. Im so impressed that I have asked my friend for an old dell laptop so I can go mobile with this thing.
my question is.... do i install the same distro for a laptop as i am using on this desktop or is there a widely used laptop distro that the linux experts always use or at least on avarage use more than any other. thanks guys |

Have you googled the model of the laptop and linux? Take some time and research it. |
Well, I run both the development versions of both Fedora and Ubuntu on my ancient Acer Aspire One ZG5 netbook (Atom N270, 1GB RAM, 120 GB HDD) with the Mate, LXDE, and XFCE desktops without any problems

Also depends on what you mean by "old". I have a 2006 laptop with 1 GIG Ram and I am using Xubuntu 14.04 with no problems. But it would not handle regular ubuntu well. Since you like ubuntu, you could try Xubuntu or if it's under 1 GIG, Lubuntu

There are no secret laptop distros.:)
I have variously run Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, SalixOS, and Slackware on laptops and netbooks. As long as your machine meets or exceeds (exceeds is better) the minimum requirements of the distro, you can run any distro you wish. |
Ubuntu's Unity desktop needs hardware graphics acceleration, so the computer needs a dedicated graphics chip. If it hasn't got one (unusual for a laptop, unless it's an old netbook) then the Unity and Gnome desktops won't work. So, run your Ubuntu installation disk and see if you get a usable live session. If it goes into wounded-snail mode, get the Mate version of Mint. The underlying system is the same as Ubuntu, so it will feel familiar.

I find it kinda hard to respond. Like RockDoctor. I fly on what works on my hardware , (including touchscreen), with minimal ram and cpu usage taken into account on this limited netbook. All periphal drives (usb,sd) all automount. Movies play. Youtube works. Libreoffice does it's thing. Code:
