As far as Debian vs Ubuntu:
1) I think Ubuntu is easier for a beginner to get started with than Debian.
2) I have installed both Debian and Ubuntu on 3 different desktop computers, plus a laptop. There is no question that Debian runs faster, and uses fewer resources, than Ubuntu.

to exploit more advanced features you have to shift to Testing or Unstable.

Not exactly, Testing and Unstable get the latest software earlier than Stable, "latest software" is not always "advanced features" ;) It may be, or it may be bugfixes or performance boosts, or even a shinyier GUI.

Further more these are the versions that senior Linux users have here in the forum :D

I too have noticed that seniour Linux users on this forum are mostly useing Testing and Unstable, but I must stress that the relative advantages of Stable, Testing and Unstable mostly come down to what your using your computer for, and personal opinion. Just because most of the senior Linux users here are on Testing and Unstable (for desktops anyway, Stable is the favourite for servers) doesn't mean its right for you, make your own mind up :)

That said I'd start with Stable, if only because when something changes, you can rule out the latest upgrades as the cause, when you know a bit more about Linux then by all means try testing and unstable.

A contradiction

Not really, I started with Stable then upgraded to testing, just like I recommend to others.

Very clear and rational view, Tortanick, your points make a lot of sense. Despite that I perceive what you senior Linux users are saying as: "You cannot go straight away to paradise, you must stay a bit on the earth" :D

Lol! heaven forbid we say that! :)

I'll have to slightly disagree with CD Bias, since etch has been released.

There are 3 Different CD 1's you can download, each installs a different desktop by default; Gnome, KDE, or XFCE (depending on which CD you have.)
