Debian 4.0r3 etch (the latest stable version)

As you are a "linux virgin" i would recommend something more user friendly. Try Ubuntu (or any from the buntu family) 8.04 as it is based on Debian.

What do you mean which one? Download the latest version for your architecture. If you mean which architecture you need to use, that depends on the processor in your machine. So, if that's your question, tell us what processor you're using. If your question is something else, then please explain in more detail what you want to know.

I agree with LordAnta ---- try the "live" *ubuntu cd.

http://kubuntu.org/download.php#latest

You don't have to install it but you can try Linux. If you like it, install it. If you don't like it, go here :

http://distrowatch.com

Try some more.

If you know you want (pure)Debian, then go here :

http://www.us.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/#stable

Good luck!!

Those links are a bit big :/.

netman, whichever distro you decide on, you'll want to download it for the x86 architecture.
