Which brand of Linux is running.

When logging into a new server how can I tell which brand of Linux is running. For example: RedHat; SuSe; etc...

It's not easy!

For a very comprehensive and mature shell solution see rkhunter's rkh_dat_get_os_info function.

For a more "noddy" but possibly good enough shell function see this LQ post.
