where to get original 10 floppy installtion images for slackware 1.0
 

Hi, I want to learn the nuts and bolts of linux and want to install slackware with floppies. I got all excited after formatting my drive with the boot and root disks for slackware 4.0 only to discover I that floppy installation support for 4.0 is discontinued because it would take 100 or so floppies. Now I've learned that the original release required 10 floppies in the "a" series of install images. Does anyone know how I can get these. I've searched diligently but cannot find them. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

There is a *very* good chance that you don't have an actual 486. If you have anything newer than a Pentium 90, you're going to run into serious issues when you try to run the old versions of SlackWare to run.
I remember back in the mid 90s SlackWare 3.x was out. That *definitely* needed a 486.

If you're looking for a small Slackware-based distribution. Consider ZipSlack.
Also, in the "Original Release" of Slackware, each letter was one disk.
There were two or three disks, IIRC. "Base", "A", and "N".

I did a quick search for you, but 3.0 was the oldest I could find. Here:

Wow. I'm really impressed that Colucix found 1.1.2!! (Way to go, Colucix!). I'm really curious what kind of hardware you're going to run that on.

Can you give us a little information on what kind of setup you have? I'm dipping my toes into some embedded Linux stuff (trying to convert a Netvista appliance into a firewall).

I think you should start with either Linux from Scratch or gentoo. Both of these distros will let you really learn the nuts and bolts of linux as you build each one in stages. Be patience as there is a lot of compiling.

Also, I agree with xeleema, running a very old distro like slackware 1.x beyond a 486 will have unpredictable results. Anyway, good luck in your linux adventure...

Thanks Xeleema for the kind reply and pointing out the thank you icon. The machine I'm trying to load slackware on is a Compaq 5000 US, made in '99 about the time the early slack versions came out, just an old beater with 800 Mhz processor, 512 ram.
