Run "sudo /sbin/lspci -v" and "sudo /sbin/lspci -n". Look at the bottom lines of the "lspci -v" listing for the device. It may indicate which kernel module is needed.

Post the results and which kernel version you are using.

Looking in the kernel source, it looks like you will use the r8169 kernel module.
Code:
enum mac_version {
        RTL_GIGA_MAC_VER_01 = 0x01, // 8169
        RTL_GIGA_MAC_VER_02 = 0x02, // 8169S
        RTL_GIGA_MAC_VER_03 = 0x03, // 8110S
        RTL_GIGA_MAC_VER_04 = 0x04, // 8169SB
        RTL_GIGA_MAC_VER_05 = 0x05, // 8110SCd
        RTL_GIGA_MAC_VER_06 = 0x06, // 8110SCe
        RTL_GIGA_MAC_VER_07 = 0x07, // 8102e
        RTL_GIGA_MAC_VER_08 = 0x08, // 8102e
        RTL_GIGA_MAC_VER_09 = 0x09, // 8102e
        RTL_GIGA_MAC_VER_10 = 0x0a, // 8101e
        RTL_GIGA_MAC_VER_11 = 0x0b, // 8168Bb
        RTL_GIGA_MAC_VER_12 = 0x0c, // 8168Be
        RTL_GIGA_MAC_VER_13 = 0x0d, // 8101Eb
        RTL_GIGA_MAC_VER_14 = 0x0e, // 8101 ?
        RTL_GIGA_MAC_VER_15 = 0x0f, // 8101 ?
The results of "lspci -n" should cinch it.

You might want to check the elrepo. I know that one of their folks was working on that driver.

This device is listed in the rtl8169 driver source code.
Code:
r8169.c:157:    { PCI_DEVICE(PCI_VENDOR_ID_REALTEK,     0x8136), 0, 0, RTL_CFG_2 }
Check if the module is loaded:
lsmod | grep rtl

If you can't modprobe this driver, it could be that either your kernel was built without this driver module, or that you need a more recent kernel that supports this particular device. The link by the last poster may have a kernel mod package you need.

If ifconfig is showing it, that's a good sign. From the thread title, I thought you actually needed the driver, you may not.

Do you usually manually assign your IP address or do you use dhcp? If using dhcp, you can try, as root or with root privilege

dhclient eth0

and see if this gives you a result.

You should actually have the system-config-network program installed, and can use that as well. Just type at a command prompt

system-config-network

This opens a dialog allowing you to configure your ethernet card.

That might be OK. I don't get anything either and I have the R8111 onboard card. It might just be part of the kernel.

Please try system-network-config command I mentioned earlier and see if you have any luck.

Hrrm, Ok, I see Alan is working with you on the CentOS forums. That's probably your best bet, as he's very knowledgeable about those. He *might* (I've forgotten, I fear) have been the one to get my R8169 working way back when.

Sorry to cop out like this, but I'm a bit stumped.

Sorry, I had a typo. run "lsmod | grep r8169" If the "r8169" kernel module isn't loaded, then run "sudo /sbin/modprobe r8169".
Also look for the module itself for the driver file:
find /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/ -iname "r8169.ko"

Installing the kernel source would help to determine whether your version of the driver supports your device:
Code:
grep -B3 -A3  '0x8136' /lib/modules/2.6.27.29-0.1-default/source/drivers/net/r8169.c

static struct pci_device_id rtl8169_pci_tbl[] = {
        { PCI_DEVICE(PCI_VENDOR_ID_REALTEK,     0x8129), 0, 0, RTL_CFG_0 },
        { PCI_DEVICE(PCI_VENDOR_ID_REALTEK,     0x8136), 0, 0, RTL_CFG_2 },
        { PCI_DEVICE(PCI_VENDOR_ID_REALTEK,     0x8167), 0, 0, RTL_CFG_0 },
        { PCI_DEVICE(PCI_VENDOR_ID_REALTEK,     0x8168), 0, 0, RTL_CFG_1 },
        { PCI_DEVICE(PCI_VENDOR_ID_REALTEK,     0x8169), 0, 0, RTL_CFG_0 },
Check if the problem is that this module wasn't built into the kernel:
grep R8169 /boot/config-$(uname -r)

I've been using my kernel to do this research. Your kernel is a lot older.

I missed that too. I have r8169. I was doing grep rt which of course, was coming out blank, so I steered you wrong on that part.

However, as mentioned, on CentOS forums, it seems you have the inestimable Alan and TC (toracat) helping, so you should be able to get this working.
(@jschiwal, not that I don't think you're helping the OP either, just that those two do quite a bit of work with CentOS rpms.)

To install kernel source, you would do yum -y install kernel-devel
