Hi There. i'm a complete newbie to linux. My friend has built me a computer and i'm running opensuse. I suspect that this question will have been asked many times but it seems important to make ones first post. I have a microsoft lifecam webcam and it will not work. i suspect i will need to install a driver. can anyone point me the right direction as to wher and how to install the driver. thank you

You need to provide more information about your camera. It is probably a USB camera.

So, plug it in, open a terminal and type lsusb

This will list the Vendor : Device hex codes of your attached USB devices.
If it doesn't say which is your camera, unplug it, do lsusb again, and see which disappears off the list.
Code:

tred@vaio:~$ lsusb
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 046d:c03f Logitech, Inc. UltraX Optical Mouse
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
(I plugged in a webcam)
tred@vaio:~$ lsusb
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 045e:00f7 Microsoft Corp. <--Camera
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 046d:c03f Logitech, Inc. UltraX Optical Mouse
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
tred@vaio:~$

Then tell us its codes.

Most modern distros recognise cameras automatically. Which version of "OpenSuse" are you running (you may have to ask your friend).

I'm glad you got it working but I would still recommend trying what tredegar suggested as you will probably find lsusb useful for solving problems you may experience in the future.

I would also recommend buying your friend many beers for the effort he took building your system :-)
