where to begin network/filesystems
 

at work, we have some remote unix boxes. I'm running suse 9.0. I would like to mount those unix boxes to my filesystem. I currently telnet or ftp into these unix boxes no problem. is this possible? I'm a newbie and don't know. I think I need to use samba but not sure where to begin. if someone can point me to a howto or manpages, I would greatly appreciate it.

Well, its completly possible to mount a remote machine to a local directory. Its called NFS (Network File System), its a little long winded to explain here, but I'll just give you a link to a good howto that I use from time to time. *Remember to set this up you'll have to have root access to your machine and the remote machines you want to use (for the setup at least)*

Ok, i've looked into nfs. Unfortunately, the remote unix server does have nfs up, but it doesn't export any part of the filesystem. I'm thinking this would not be an option for me since I do not have root access on the other server. I can telnet, ftp, and ping the server no problem. I'm thinking mounting the filesystems isn't possible with my access. If anyone else has a lead, i'd appreciate it.

well, if you have samba access to the remote machine you can also add that share as a mount point to you /etc/fstab file and it mounted to a directory at bootup. I don't have an example infront of me to remind me how I did it for my xbox, but I can post it when I get home. Thats the only other thing I can think of tho.
