Where should I be putting/installing stuff?

Hey,
I've been using Red Hat 9 for about 3 days now and just realized, I have no idea where I'm putting stuff. So far, I've downloaded all the RPMs and source files straight to my home directory and have been running (and I think installing for the source files at least) in my home directory! I doubt that's how its supposed to work. To sum it up I'm asking for a bit of explaining on what all the folders are and where some common stuff should be kept.

Thanks :newbie:

Take a look at this,

or try 'man hier' for local help

Baix; slow down take time to read usr guide ,install guide, if u have definitive guide + any other information. tips, tricksand clues abound!
you may have to redistribute rpm,s and source,s else where, preferable in
own partitions; source should be with dependancy progs.

i actually have a question pertaining to this
i downloaded a file to create Fractals
GL-Fract
now: when i go to install this, will this properly work:
Code:

[scuzzy@localhost Desktop]$ tar -xzvf GL-Fract.tar.gz
[scuzzy@localhost Desktop]$ cd GL-Fract
[scuzzy@localhost Desktop]$ su
Password:
[root@localhost GL-Fract]# make all
[root@localhost GL-Fract]# exit
[scuzzy@localhost GL-Fract]$

will this put the appropriate files in the appropriate directories, ie: where all other users can access them? this specific topic has always had me lost.
