Where is YUM in Fedora?
I know this sounds stupid, but I'm trying out fedora 11 for the first time, and I want to install adobe flash player, but I need the dependencies. When I look in the administration section, I don't see anything! I used Ubuntu and openSUSE and Synaptic and Yast were locateable. Am I doing something wrong, or is my knowledge of what YUM actually is lacking? Also, does anyone know how to install adobe flash player on 64-bit fedora??!?!?
Thanks guys! :) |
yum is only used on a command line, e.g. "yum install someprogram". This is equivalent to apt-get or aptitude on Ubuntu. For a pointless, frilly gui, System | Administration | Add/Remove Software will load the packagekit gui, which is the synaptic equivalent.

It is as acid_kewpie says. OP, if I may make the suggestion: in the future, go to the command line first when you're solving problems. All the power of a Linux system is there, and GUIs like Synaptic and Yast are shortcuts. Check it out - any command you can run from your menus, you can run from the command line, tab-complete at the command line, and locate with the command `which`.
(Disclaimer: sometimes, the menu names and the names of the binaries they call don't agree. If you're not sure, right click on your main menu, choose 'Edit menus', find the entry, right click and get its properties, and look at the command: field.) |
Thanks alot guys, but do you have any guides for which I am able to learn to use the command line? I am still pretty new to linux, and any information would be of great value to me! :) Thanks again! :)

The most important command there is is `man`. It gives you documentation on most commands - try `man man` or `man yum` or some such to get a feel for it. Mostly, you just need to get comfortable moving around; if you can't figure out how to do something, that's what we're here for. :)

Thanks alot guys! :)
