Where Exactly Does Ubuntu 9.10 First Store Downloaded .ISO and .EXE Files?

I DID check out the similar threads and found them helpful. However, none of the threads seemed to answer my specific question. Whenever I download ANY kind of program with any extension on it, I can never locate where the h*** it is!! This leaves me with the feeling of being a complete dunce.

Only one time did I see a triangular shaped icon for an executable file on the desktop after the download had finished. Yet, nothing I tried could open, install, and run the "app." I do know how to click on an .iso link to download it. After that, though, I am completely confused about how to continue, since I can't even find it in any folder or file. Beginning to think there is no hope for me to get through or over the learning curve of this supposedly very user-friendly Linux distro.

I'm not sitting at an Ubuntu machine right now. But I believe that if you download through Firefox, the default download directory is the "Downloads" folder in your home directory.

So if your username on the Ubuntu system is cbl48, the directory would be /home/cbl48/Downloads

Do you realize that Linux does not have such a thing as a .exe file?

And that programs in Linux are not installed using self-extracting executables?

Have you tried to use find?
