where can i get SUSE 9.1?
 

im new to this forum, and tried searching but couldnt find anything. can you get it for free? or do you pay for it? and how hard is it to use?

ok...i downloaded it, and i cant get it to open. ask what program i want to open it with

program in which operating system are you using?

i downladed SUSE 9.1 from here. i have Nero

If you have downloaded the ISO image file, just go to Nero and choose to burn a "Disk image or saved project" and select the file you downloaded...it will burn the bootable installation CD

There are two ways of downloading suse.

The first way is to download the iso image from

click on the link at the bottom of the page that says "Download SUSE LINUX Personal CD here".


The other way is to download the via ftp. You have to download the boot.iso file found here

ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/current/boot/boot.iso


Both these files are called iso files and are basically the contents of a CD put into one file so that they can be transferred easity.

You now have to burn this file onto a CD. Many burning programs have the ability to burn iso files. In nero the selection will be "burn iso image" or something similar.

You then select the iso file you downloaded and insert a blank CD then click the burn button. This will extract all the files from the iso image and create a bootable CD. You then have to reboot your computer with the CD in the drive and you will be taked to the SUSE installation screen.


NOTE: do not simply burn the iso onto the CD. This will do nothing. The way to see if you have in fact burnt the image is to look in the CD drive when you have compteted buring the image and check that there are many files on the cd instead of just the boot.iso file. In fact the boot.iso file should not be there at all.

The newest issue of Linux Format has Slackware 10.0 and SuSE 9.1 with the September issue if you wanna go that route.

i downloaded SuSE 9.1 from the SuSE site. now how do i burn it so it will load when i boot up the computer

i'm experimenting to find the right distro for me, and liked suse 9.1 personal. so far the only one to recognise my thinkpad x31 winmodem. obviously there's lots of important stuff missing, so i'd like to try the professional version. is it only available to buy? can't find it downloadable anywhere. how does that work vis a vis 'free' software? i'd be happy to pay but want to make sure it's right for me first.

"Free" as in speech, not as in beer. You can (I think) do a network install of 9.1 pro or do the Personal installation and point YAST at the Pro updates.
