Where are you sound? - solved

I just installed kubuntu on my new T60 and I am not getting any sound. I checked the Kmix and nothing is muted, checked Alsamixer and nothing is muted, and my soundcard is recognized. Is there some sort of secret hidden mute button that I am missing? For what it is worth, I plugged a usb headset and selected it in skype (the only program that I know where to choose output) and it worked fine.

Thanks in advance for any help, and let me know if there is more information that I can pass on.

The sound now works, and I wanted to post just in case someone was having a similar problem. In my system settings -> sounds -> hardware the audio device was set to autodetect. Do not trust this. I manually set it to ALSA and everything works fine now.
