RH9 installed apps in /usr/share
That's the system default rpm packages.

But if you install tar ball packages or some stand-alone directory program yourself, you should put into /usr/local
Just a tradition.

I might be mistaken with this but my experience is that the applications are not like in the Microsoft world where everything is a nice little folder. In Linux the parts of the applications are located in differnent places according to what part it is. /bin , usr/bin, sbin I think are all places where binary files are kept. /var/logs is where the logs of various apps are kept. So if I understand your question correctly, they may be anyplace. I have also heard that it depends on which distro you have and even which version. The best thing I have found is to do a "locate xxxxx". That will usually tell you where most of the differrent files are.
