where's my rc.local

While trying to get some things working on my linux box (suse9.0) i've been referred to the so called rc.local file. For example, i'd like to start my lirc daemon at boot, and at the suse site their also referring to that file, but it just doesn't seem to exist on my system. Where is located, or does suse use another file instead nowadays?

Mine is in /etc/rc.d - try whereis rc.local or find rc.local or slocate rc.local or just open the /etc/rc.d/ folder and have a look in there.

Nope, it isn't in etc/rc.d (should have mentioned it before)
find rc.local says this:

baslinux:/ # find rc.local
find: rc.local: No such file or directory

does every linux installation ought to have it?

From my reading, it appears that SuSE doesn't have one. You will have to create a file in /etc/rc.d call rc.local and put whatever lines you need in it.

SuSE9 uses /etc/init.d rather than /etc/rc.d

If you want to start a daemon at startup, you can add the script to init.d (if it's not already created), and link it into the /etc/init.d/rc* directories according to which runlevel(s) you want it to start in.
