Where'd Linuxconf go in Redhat 8.0

I don't know if it wasn't installed at the installation time or if it doesn't exist in RH 8.0 but as root I have no linuxconf ??? Can anyone shed some light as to if it's there and I'm just not finding it - or did they replace with it some other config tool ??

Linuxconfig no longer exists in RH8. What specifically are you trying to configure? Most things can be configured from the 'Start Here' icon on the desktop.

it was removed as it was generally regarded to be the linux equivalent of an old Ford Granada, with onyl three wheels and some very bizarre stains on the back seat..... really wasn't good news for keeping your system healthy.

Well I'm looking for one place to config my sendmail - FTP - user accounts - IPchains policies etc. I know these all have individual conf files that can be edited by hand then HUP'd but linuxconf had these all in one neat packaged area and config changes were easy and quick.

well there's webmin i guess, which is a lot better. but you can't beat learning to edit them by hand, it's normally pretty easy once you get used to it, and you end up feeling (if not being) much more in control of your system.

I've been looking for the same thing

Whatever Linuxconf was regarded as it made it easy to configure services. Being a newbie I consider this a big step backwards in user friendliness under RH8. How am I supposed to configure things like samba shares, ftp server, etc? from the terminal or editing files? THAT is a step backwards. I'm basically stuck with RH8 at this time not being able to configure anything.

Start Here has too few options. Everething is scattered all over the system menus. There needs to a be one place where one can configure EVERYTHING using GUI tools like MMC in Windows 2000 Server. Until then Linux will be too prohibitive for average users without strong UNIX skills. It's still too disorganized, confusing and too cryptic.

well we certainly don't need yet another debate about this, but hopefully you'll soon see how extremely simple it is to have proper control over your samab shares by editing the files by hand. so simple.

okay if linuxconf does'nt exists in 8. then how am i suppose to do things i used to do with linuxconf
