Wher to get compressed OS downloads????
The topic is horrible i know.
You guys know that we can download windows xp in .rar compressed. i can download a 700mb.rar to get almost a gig worth of iso.... so i was wondering if anyone knows a site where they compress the iso to a rar or any other format so that i can save time downloading.... Why i recently tried downloading knoppix dvd when i reached 3.2gb of 3.6gb the downloaded ended i mean i cannot resume... any thought is appreciated ~t1nm@n |
With out permission from microsoft I think that would be illegal for tampering with copy right material. If im correct on this LQ won't support you here. Also being microsoft most people will probably refer you to a micrsoft community unless its like a xen based installation.
How ever if you are looking for legit Linux distros you can download a torrent client and download the torrent file. That will check your md5s and download all the ip packets needed to complete the installtion |
You might want to consider a BitTorrent client: what's good about that is the download will resume after your Internet connection pauses and resumes; it doesn't just stop.
You might also want to consider this: Ubuntu already comes compressed on its image (via squashfs). The bootloader and kernel are not compressed, but everything else is. In fact, so compressed that 4GB of data can fit on a 700MB CD just fine. Edit: The OP is trying to download Linux in an archive, not Windows in an archive. |
@jmc1987 ---- hey i got the windows version i'm using from the internet... let it be pirated.... but i hear xp is no longer maintained by microsoft...and i dont need updates.... until i get a good grip with wine i have no choice but to use xp on my box....and thanks for pointing me about the forums rules on pirates.... dont kick me out admins...
@ken------- there is no speed...but that maybe because of the seed-leech ratio...anyway thanks guys |

For future reference I recommend you download iso's using "wget -c ...."
That way you can resume that broken download. Might even work on that knoppix. Instead of clicking to download, right-click and save the address. Plug it into the wget command. |

Pirating it would be wrong . . . and dumb, since you could probably buy a legitimate copy for less than $20 on eBay. Just use WINE . . . If you've been a DOS/Windows user for a long time, you never get "good" at working without MS in your life until you take the plunge and just do it. WINE is not hard, and you barely even need it anymore outside of games. |
Few things:
1. Legitimate versions of Windows xp only ever came on CD (not DVD), so how could it be "almost a gig worth of iso" ??? 2. When downloading a Linux distro, perhaps you could try using better client software. Firefox supports resuming stopped downloads. Better yet, you could try Bittorrent as mentioned above. 3. rar isn't commonly used under Linux. You can use it, but there are several other superior compression formats available. 4. Talk of piracy isn't tolerated here, for obvious reasons. 5. Openly admitting (in writing!) that you have stolen Windows is not very smart. |

oh !! my goodness maybe this was because of my language.....
Ok you guys know the pirated version of xp vista are sometimes compressed to small rar packages...and even games.... i dont need to find copyrighted stuff. I want links or other stuff where i can download a compressed distribution.....again an example http://www.icarosdesktop.com/dl.htm here you have the download link for Amiga icaros desktop is that is in a 7zip archive. I wanted to see if there are sites that give linux distro iso in compressed form.... hey just to grab your attention.... i dont need copyrighted software. i just took this for an example... regards, t1nm@n |
FWIW, most distros use compressed packages by default, so compressing a Linux iso isn't going to make it much smaller, if at all.
Ubuntu, being a derivative of Debian, uses packages that are compressed with cpio. Believe me, if there were a more efficient way, people would be using it. |

I believe the OP is talking about, say, a .tar.gz or .zip archive with a Linux ISO image in it. I was wondering if such a download did exist myself as well.

tinman;
I know that you are not asking for help with pirated SW. Regardless, to avoid misunderstandings, please do not discuss it here. You have heard us state that piracy is not something you should be doing---whatever you decide, keep it to yourself. Meanwhile, we welcome your Linux questions. |
