When you do ls -la command what does the number after permissions mean ?

What does the number after permissions mean when you do ls -la

drwxrwxrwx 3 <-- this number

2. Number of links: Second field specifies the number of links for that file.
Code:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 90024 ago 29 18:25 /usr/bin/lame
In this example, 1 indicates only one link to this file.
