When using telnet to connect to memcache and I type STATS nothing happens

I have installed libevent, memcache client for PHP and memcached. I was able to load it as a daemon and after typing netstat -l, I could see that it is listening at port 11211. I tried to telnet to it by typing `telnet localhost 11211`. What happens is I am able to connect to that port, but when I type STATS and press the enter key nothing happens. I hope someone could help me out in this. Thanks in advance!
