When I try to use mint 15 cinnamon, I have "freezing" problems, but Mate is fine. I really enjoy Mint and can't wait for 16 to be released. Hopefully, I'll be able to use Cinnamon then.

I don't see exact question here

it is very easy to switch desktop environments at login screen on linux, so keep switching and with upgrades you will probably get cinnamon working.

Freezing Cinnamon

I was hoping someone could tell me how to stop Cinnamon "freezing" or "hanging up" my pc. I install it fine and do the whole update thing at the beginning, so that the version I then have is the very latest - but still, it happens. Has anyone else had a similar problem? How do I solve it?

What are the secifications of your PC? Cinnamon is a fairly heavy desktop environment (it is basically a highly modified Gnome 3) while MATE is lightweight (it is a highly stripped down, modified, and updated fork of Gnome 2). If your machine can't run Gnome 3 it probably wont run Cinammon, if it can run Gnome Fallback (or Classic mode) it will run MATE.

Thanks for the help. I've checked with the TOP command and I find that Firefox (CPU 7.0%; MEM 4.0%) and Thunderbird (CPU 6.0%; MEM 4.5%) are the biggest consumers. Bear in mind that, at present I have Mate installed and that it works fine - no freezing at all. Its only when I install Cinnamon that I have the problem.

Hi k3IT01, I have 3 gigs of Ram and my HD is 320 Gb, I also have a decent graphics card. I hope these specs should cope with Cinnamon. Is there anything else that could be causing the problem?

My old 2Ghz Pentium 4 can theorectically have 3 gigs of RAM and it has a 1tb hard drive but I know it wont run Cinnamon well (it wont run Gnome shell even with its "decent" for its time graphics card). The specs for the machine are important please try to be as accurate as possible with the details.

It might also be worth considering hardware problems. Faulty RAM, a nice graphics card with insufficient power, or ineffective cooling, are a few examples that could contribute to freezing when using more system intensive software.

Does the computer run hotter with the new desktop? And are you running any CPU or GPU intensive programs?

Also, some graphics cards for example, might not run their fan at an appropriate speed without the right driver and therefore overheat (and a driver may not be available for Linux, although I'm speaking from experiences from years ago and I believe most reputable graphics cards now offer Linux drivers).
