Exclamation what type of partition?(xfs question)

My friend told that if i make a linux partition, i should make it xfs. Whats the difference between ext3 and xfs and should i use xfs?

Also if I decide to use xfs, do i use the bf2.4 boot (for installing the debian distribution)?

thx for the help

ext3 is a journalized version of the ext2 filesystem providing metadat journaling for faster recovery. I recommend using this or reiserfs.

xfs is also a fileystem with metadata journaling and is optimized for scalability. Your best to only use this type of filesystem with high end SCSI/and or fibre channel storage with an uninterruptable power supply. So you can lose alot of data if your system crashes unexpectedly.

The Gentoo install chapter 6 is worth a read for considerations about choosing what filesystem for what partition.

The Advanced filesystem implementor's guide (requires registration) is the best explantionation of file system usage and performance I have seen.

# Linux filesystem structure
Directory Navigation Help File
Filesystems, Directories, and Devices Help File
Proper Filesystem Layout

You will need a kernel that supports xfs for your install, but I haven't gone through a Debian install.
