what should I do first?
Hey guys, this is my first post and I am embarrassed because I am a total noob. Anyway, the dilemma I have is that I have a new 64bit pc and have win xp and ubuntu to install.
Which one should I install first? Hmm, also there is some confusion I am having regarding KDE and Gnome, I have yet to try Kubuntu but are there any significant differences between these versions other than the GUI? Also about the file partitioning for win xp. It is troublesome, as the filesystems are different from that of linux and what are the potential troubles a noob like me will face in installation?? hmm, feel free to be as specific as possible, I am listening =) |
always install windows first, as it kindly nukes any bootloader already installed without asking... whereas ubuntu should recognise the presence of XP and configure the bootloader accrodingly to access both.
as for partitioning... well there's no real difference, just that you (should) have multiple partitions for linux but only the one for XP. Might also be in your interests to create a fat32 partition (if you plan to use NTFS for XP, as linux can't access NTFS to share data effectively between the two. |
Install windows First, give it as much room as it needs. on a 40GB drive i would do something like:
windows XP install drive: c;\ = 15GB fat32 drive = 1 to 5GB then install Linux on the rest On my laptop i have Ubuntu install and the i installed kubuntu so i have the latested Gnome and the lastest KDE. -Nex6 |
FAT32 partition
What is the additional FAT32 partition for?
In that case, I am recommended to set up all my partitions (including the ones i intend to use for linux) in win xp? or I will be better off setting up the partitions I need for win xp, and leaving the partitioning to linux? Are there any gd installation tutorials u will recommend?? |
The 'fat32' partition is for safe sharing of data between the two. OS's
Linux must create it own partitions. with the "empty space" if you dont need to "share data" (read and write) the dont create one. -Nex6 |
