What OS do I need?

I just bought a new 1u server with no OS. The server spec is:
Dual PIII Pro 1.4Ghz
Raid Controller
two 36 gig scsi mirrored
1 gig RAM

I would like to test with 9i oracle and mysql. What Linux OS do I need? redhat 2.1 AS keeps coming to the front, but this is just a playground for now and could potentially be serving up a website in the future. Should I dish out the $799 for RH AS or use a bastard kernel to support my SMP?

I don't know but couldn't you recompile the kernel with "SMP" into it? Just a wild guess.

Yeh you could compile SMP support with most kernels and distros these days...

Now that I am not the first responder... Sweet setup

As for shelling out 800 bux, it depends on what you will be doing with that system. Is this going to be running for a Super company, or what? Or is this just going to be hosting a small FTP server for you and a few buddies to have online storage for?

I see that you said "this is just a playground for now" so I am guessing it's not a huge business. If my guess is right, I'd kinda hold off on shelling out that many skins. If you do want some support there are other versions, and other distros that offer support for alot less money. SuSE does for ~80 bux on their latest release, and I think the other's are all fairly closely priced. Mandrake I think pulls in a little lower, at around 69 for a single DVD version of their latest, and I am not sure where RH has there's with 8.0 out.

I am sure they aren't near 800 bux though

MasterC ... The server will be used as a database driven website after I experiment with oracle and mysql. Oracle supports only the AS edition of RH. I particularly don't like mysql because of data consistency issues, but I have not ruled it out mostly because of cost. How hard is it to make the kernel of RH 8.0 use SMP? anyone?

thanks,

paterrel

Depends on your level of experience. It might work out of the box, but if not, it will require a kernel recompile, which isn't THAT bad, but can be frustrating for a n00b.

Cool
