what is your modem model
 

hello all,
i failed to find a driver to my modem,
so can anybody using redhat 7.2 or 9 and having his modem working tell me what is the model of your modem i wanna buy a new modem to go online with my linux :)

until you get a better reply, most internal DIAL UP modems are windows only modems and have a missing piece of hardware, for calculations that is handled by your RAM.

most external modems are FULL hardware modems and will work with linux.

If you mean ADSL I can't help

umm, if you are buying a new modem, an external offers you lights and the ability to turn if off instead of trying to reset it by other means. If you really want an internal modem, theres bound to be one on those lists, but I won't check myselft AND if you like do a search at http://www.linmodems.org/

On my new computer I have an Zoom V.92 external serial modem model number 3048L. On my old computer I have a Hayes external V.92 serial modem. On both computers they were easy to install under Red Hat Linux. Most internal modems are winmodems and depend on Windows to do some of the work. I do not know of any external serial modems that are winmodems. They are completely hardware based and do not need any help from the operating system. That is only true of external serial modems however, not external USB modems.

If you add an external serial modem you can still keep your internal modem. You do not need to remove your internal modem if you do not want to. Windows can continue using it. Or if you prefer you can have it use the external modem instead. Your internal modem is most likely causing one of your two serial ports to not be useable. If one serial port does not seem to work try the other.

The good news is that no driver is required for an external serial modem. I use Red Hat 9 and prefer to use the neat command to set up my modem. After using the neat command it may or may not detect the modem. If not, it will take your word for it that it is really there and at some point will say "generic modem" and "no driver required." It's really easy! Not everyone uses the neat command but it is how I prefer to do it.

Be sure to set the modem where you can see the row of LEDs. You will be able to tell if something is being uploaded or downloaded by which LEDs light up. I would feel deprived if I had an internal modem and did not have those LEDs to tell me what is going on.

Some people do manage to make internal winmodems work under Linux but I have never wanted to try. I tossed my internal winmodem into the garbage.

The last time I looked, USR made a PCI hardware modem. If they still do, you just need to be careful you do not get the cheaper Winmodem
As I recall, the hardware modem was around $80.00 while the Winmodem was $40-$50. The boxes are not that different, but if a store carries both you should be able to tell them apart.

I have Red Hat 8.0 & Mandrake 9.0 and use a U.S. Robotic model 5610B internal modem.

I don't know where you are, but I got mine for about $ 60 at Walmart.

Be sure to look for "linux" on back of box.
