what is the use of $ENV ?

Hello y'all. Can someone please give a detailed and simplistic explanation of $ENV variable. What it really does, its function effect on shells etc. I need it to be explained and not advised to read the man pages. Would be very grateful. Distro is Red Hat. Thanks and lovely week ahead. Cheers.

This is used to point your shell session to the file that should be sourced in order to: "run a program in a modified environment" , do:

> man env

For more details on how to do this.

But he OP is asking about the $ENV variable (which I never heard of), not the env command.

Maybe he's just confused and means the env command.
