What is the generic default video driver filename in 8.10?
 

The Nvidia driver for my system (Nvidia TNT2 AGP Video) permits only 800x600 max resolution so I prefer the 8.10 generic default video driver.

I would like to LOCK the default in place to prevent update manager from routinely overriding the default with the latest Nvidia driver.

Can anyone tell me:
1. The default video driver filename in 8.10?
2. How to lock it so that it never changes?

BACKGROUND: xserver-xorg-video-nv is the default Nvidia driver that I do NOT want. Its max resolution is 800x600. I am trying to prevent Update Manager from continually installing newer versions of Nvidia drivers. I do not want them.

When I delete the Nvidia driver (xserver-xorg-video-nv), Ubuntu 8.10 reverts to the generic default driver that allows me to select higher screen resolutions, perfect.

I need the filename of the generic default Ubuntu 8.10 video driver so that I will know which one to lock.

Synaptic lists thirty-seven installed video drivers including:
xserver-xorg-video-intel 922KB 2:2.4.1 1ubuntu10.3 intel i8xx,i9xx display driver. This has the ubuntu logo by it.
xserver-xorg-video-i810 250KB 2:2.4.1 1ubuntu10.3 intel i8xx,i9xx display driver. This does not have the ubuntu logo.

Can't you simply deactivate the proprietary driver from "Hardware Drivers" ?.

Yes. (It seems "Newbie" does mean "clueless." :)) Thank you for the suggestion. I did not even know there was a section of Hardware Drivers until your post sent me looking. I appreciate the "heads up."

Am I understanding you correctly that if I deactivate the proprietary driver in Hardware Drivers, Update Manager will no longer attempt to overwrite the generic default 8.10 Ubuntu video driver during future automatic updates?

I would think so - when you activate it, it goes and gets the driver. I had to run without for a while due to BIOS/driver issues on the 8400M GS in this laptop.

Just for thoroughness, the driver is "nvidia-glx-new'. For that version of Ubuntu, and deactivating it via Hardware Drivers does re-apply the default.

As far as your resolution, in "Preferences...Screen Resolution", you can try to manipulate it there. If not, then you'll have to edit the xorg.conf file, which is quite cumbersome.
