Question What is the FTP command to upload a folder?

I am using FTP command line, I know put is to upload a file from localhost to the server, but how do I upload a whole folder?

I could do put *.*, but is there any special command for uploading a full folder?

Some GUI FTP clients allow this, but I have never seen it in a terminal mode. I always just make a directory on the remote system and then
mput *
(I'm not sure what
put "."
does

There is no command to upload a folder; GUI clients 'work around' the protocol. They simply issue a number of commands that one would have to issue manually otherwise.
