what is the difference between snd-emu10k1 and emu10k1?

One of them is for ALSA(snd-emu10k1) and the other is for OSS(emu10k1)?

OSS - Open Sound System, it is a little bit older and dated technology (oher crrect me if i am wrong) it has been depricated in the 2.6 series kernel

ALSA - The replacement to OSS, it is newer has better support and is the future of linux sound systems.

I would recommend using alsa over oss. although you can use whichever you perfer or if you soundcard is not supported under ALSA or vice versa.
