this has been asked a million time already. and for future reference, its called a linux distro. linux IS the operating system.

if yo uwant a hard one, get gentoo. it dont get no harder dan dat. if you want an average-hard distro, try debian or slackware.

No single distro is perfect for everyone, nor is every distro perfect for everyone. Sometimes it takes a bit of trial-and-error, but there are some distrobutions that excel in areas others may not. It's all a matter of personal preference and what you find most comfortable.

ditto.. but if you like knoppix, try debian. not at all easy to insall, but easyer than some. If you do go for Debian, I recomend he testing distro as opposed to stable. It s fairy stable in itself, but has updated drivr support and a much more ntuative installer. Plus once up and running the apt system is a boon.

Hi,

If you like challenge and want to learn, pick up a live CD with a compiler/linker, and build your own LFS distro. I think it's the way you'll learn the more ;)

Gentoo (www.gentoo.org) is the best distro.
But for a Newbie, Fedora (www.fedora.redhat.com) or Mandrake (www.mandrakesoft.com) do the job.

personaly i prefer slackware, if you are wanting to learn gentoo might work, it will definatly require you to learn how to use the command line. from what i've seen there really is no one best 'distro', it all depends on what you want to do with your box. usualy distrowatch.com(i think thats it) or linuxiso.org will have some genral info on what a distro is for and such, just try different ones and see what you like the best, thats how i found slackware.

hi there
for you as a newbie a good distro is to
choose among the distros for which u can also get some person having the know how in your area, city etc etc

believe me it helps, apart from help at LQ it will also be handy

once u r comfortable with a distro then u can try different distros

look out for Linux User Groups(LUGs) in your area

regards
gaurav
