What is Similar to ISA Server?

Hello.

Is there something similar in Linux to Microsoft's ISA Server to accelerate traffic flow through a server/linux router?

There must be something better in Linux.

Yes, it's called a linux server. You manipulate the configuration to maximise traffic flow.

ISA is a firewalled proxy server IIRC. That stuff about accelerating traffic frow is just advertising.

We use IPTables and Squid.

ok. I was just asking. Since I have a friend bragging about it I need it to know if there was something else. I'm currently using squid and obviously iptables. My friend who is a Microsoft guy says he can compress the websites to be re-served to the clients and as a result saving bandwidth in the LAN. He can also see all the clients that are connected and what traffic they're consuming in real time and stated that it can't be done in Linux. This i couldn't argue since I haven't done it and don't know how and would like to know how. I don't know.

I told him Linux does security and servers a lot better than MS.

I won't change Linux Server/FW/Router for MS's.

Squid cache the web contents itself you can do such configuration in squid but it doesn't mean LAN bandwidth, it should WAN bandwidth (if you want to save LAN traffic then clients have to save web contents individually by using web browser facility, now a days Gigabytes network devices are available therefore i think no need worry much about LAN traffic )

check the ntop it may helpful to monitor client activity.

Well then you can tell him that your linux will do all that standard at no extra cost, and has done for years. You also get secure real-time bandwidth throttling and you can deploy your server to as many clients as you like without increased licencing... no artificial scalability restrictions. (Hmmm - ask if ISA can run in transparent mode.)

This sort of thing is basic functionality in the unix/linux world - that MS folk feel it's a bragging point just shows why linux rules the server.
