What is postfix and what is this error?

When I do a full service restart, I get this during it...

Shutting down postfix: [ OK ]
Starting postfix: postalias: warning: My hostname localhost is not a fully qualified name - set myhostname or mydomain in /etc/postfix/main.cf
postmap: warning: My hostname localhost is not a fully qualified name - set myhostname or mydomain in /etc/postfix/main.cf
postmap: warning: My hostname localhost is not a fully qualified name - set myhostname or mydomain in /etc/postfix/main.cf

postmap: warning: My hostname localhost is not a fully qualified name - set myhostname or mydomain in /etc/postfix/main.cf
[ OK ]

Is this critical? How ever do I fix it? I tried just changing the only spot that says "localhost" in /etc/postfix/main.cf to "mydomain" but then postfix doesn't start at all.

Any ideas?

Postfix is an email suite for linux. Mostly, it's used for local mail, for example emailing messages to root regarding system errors or emailling from one user account to another in a local network (or a single computer). It can be used for general email though. Like if you wanted to do your email from the command line without starting X. It appears it is not entirely configured correctly on your system. I can't help much there as I haven't done much with postfix.

If email is working on your system I wouldn't worry too much.
