What is -liberty?

Dear all:

I am compiling an application on linux and getting an error that could not find -liberty in /usr/bin/ld. What is -liberty? Where can I find it?

Thanks,

What application are you compiling? What distro are you using? It sounds like one of the dependencies is not installed.

Welcome to LQ.

'liberty' (l short for lib) means libiberty http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libiberty

Never installed, but used internally, while compiling binutils, gcc (gdb).

readelf -s /usr/bin/ld | grep libiberty
objdump -Dslx /usr/bin/ld | grep libiberty
Both commands will show some libiberty objects.

Known errors : When the applications are compiled inside the source.
Applications like binutils and gcc requires a build directory outside the source.
