what is kernel firmware?


I am a linux newbie. I try to recompile kernel, while doing it, I see the /lib/firmware. But I dont understand what it is? Can anyone explain to me?

I believe it is the binary drivers that accompany the main kernel source code. Debian has had an issue with some of the licensing over the years.
