What is Gstreamer ?


Had googled for gstreamer and frankly after much reading, still do not quite understand what gstreamer is.

Seems like it is used with gnome while kde is using something else, xine?


Any alternative simple explanation is appreciated

can any one tell how to make a audio streaming server using gstreamer? i want the idea about code? how to code it...
i have searched and find about gst-launch tool. but i want to do that with c code...plz help
