/dev/shm is the SystemV shared memory implementation, basically to do with virtual memory.

It's used to allow programs to talk to each other quickly, and can be ignored by users.

Post Regarding /dev/shm

Hi all,
I wanted to further know, Is "/dev/shm" a physical drive or is it the swap partition created while installing linux. Or this drive, uses space from some other drives in the system?

Thanks,
Naga

Hi,

I asked this question some time ago. Acid_kewpie gave me this answer:

it's a dynamic ramdrive, you can write data to it to hold it in ram directly.
Thats it.

If you want to know more about it, just try and google it, you will get a lot of hits
