Question What is a "typed memory object"?

I wonder what is a "typed memory object".May someone give me an explanation?
It is referenced in an manual about mmap().The URL is listed below:

http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/...ions/mmap.html

I use C/C++ to program.

void *mmap(void *addr, size_t len, int prot, int flags,
int fildes, off_t off);
It says "typed memory object" is a memory object that fildes
specified.I wonder what kind of data is contained in this kind of object.

Any reply is appreciated.
