What if...

Hi,

I post this in the newbie forum because it possibly is a newbie question.

What would happen if I change the VESA in Intel in this:

Quote:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection
and then restart the system...

If "Intel" is a wrong entry, would the X keep trying to start? How could I change the runlevel THEN?

Tnx

Thor
(this is a reaction to some help I got - but the restart-and-trouble bit kept me from doing the changes to the xorg.conf)

If X cannot find a driver specified in xorg.conf, then it will not start. I am not clear on what things will cause it to retry, but the end result is the same. The relevant error(s) will appear in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

If X fails to start, you should wind up in a terminal, but sometimes the system will simply lock up.

If you do get a terminal, you can change the runlevel from there---otherwise, you can edit the GRUB kernel line at boot time.

Thanks...and, it's the "hanging" bit I'm very worried about. I had a failing X once that kept restarting...but hanging up is just as bad. In the best scenario, a terminal would help me. I can find my way around,, there.

What if...(therefore) it hangs (up the phone)...

You can normally get a terminal login with <CTRL><ALT><F1>
Try it now.

Your GUI (X) is running on <CTRL><ALT><F7>
Try it now.

Otherwise you can always fix up xorg.conf by booting from a "live CD" and mounting your / partition

Tnx,

Now...that last bit IS interesting. I'll get knoppix, that seems to be a rescue Linux...

Tnx!

Most install CD/DVDs will allow you to do the same by typing

linux rescue

at the initial text prompt

Eh, so no need to DL Knoppix (or the like) and I could keep using the environment I'm used to...

Tnx!
