What / how to use Hard Disk icons on desktop

Total Newbie here - sorry for stupid question, but what are the Hard Disk icons on my KDE desktop, how do I use them, etc. I have not been able to find any info with web search, manuals, etc. When I open, they are empty. If I try to copy something to them, I get an error. Can somebody just point me in the right direction to learn what these things are? (I'm actually fairly competent at computer stuff, long time Windows user., etc.) Actually installed and configured several drivers / programs in Linux so far, but this has me baffled !

Mandrake 10 Official / KDE 3.2 / Dual Boot system w/ Windows XP on 40GB hda, Linux on 10GB hdb

Thanks . . .

what is the exact error message that you get??
you may need to edit /etc/fstab to allow users to write to these
partitions...........

Simply says "Could not write to mnt/hd/filename.xxx"

I know I don'r want to write to any NTFS partitions - I'm assuming one of these icons represents my NTFS drive (Windows) and the other my Linux drive.

open a terminal. Type in su and your root password. Then type fdisk -l and post what that gives you. Also say which partition you are trying to mount.
