what format is music cd?

I've been trying to burn a music CD. And here's a question I've never seen asked nor answered.

When one uses grip to rip a CD, the files come over as "wav". But does that mean when you BURN a CD, it should also be wav? Or should it be mp3?

Thanking you in advance.
