What files and folders do I transfer from an old version of ubuntu to a new version o

How to and what files and folders to transfer to a new version or update of ubuntu(latest lts), from an older version of ubuntu(12.04) to keep pretty much the same envirnment. I am using gnome desktop and virtual box with windows xp on it. Can I use a back up program for ubuntu like "Back in Time" or "Deja Dup"?

Thanks for your time

Quick answer:
1. Your home directory
2. /opt (if not empty)
3. /etc (configurations kept there can be useful if you know what you're doing)
4. /usr/local (if you've been compiling you own stuff)

I've never heard of "Back in Time" or "Deja Dup". I use/have used kbackup and rsync. They do the job.

I'd wait for Ubuntu 14.04 Long Term Support coming out in four months and then install the new system
