What exactly is an .iso file?

An iso is usually a disk image conforming to iso9660 standard. The iso9660 file system was made originally for CDs but now I think it can be used for any sort of disk.

what exactly is a iso file

iso is sort for International Organization for Standarardization
Iso 9660 also known as El Torito standard is to put the first bite so on the cd that is bootable
